Delta Beta Alumni Association
One year ago we began a process to establish a formal Delta Beta Alumni
Association. With the help of many we now have:
-
A formal legal entity
-
Officers in place and functioning
-
We have collected membership dues approaching our First Year
goal of $8000.00 to benefit the Active Chapter.
-
A new and improved Web Site with a significantly improved
Database, secure but accessible to all of the Brothers
We
now begin the second year of our Association. We do so following:
-
The National Convention being held in Phoenix and the Chapter
receiving its Fifth Sisson Award
-
Another year of Beta excellence on campus with the Chapter
again achieving academic excellence while maintaining their very
active Leadership roll in Student Government and Activities (See
www.uadeltabetabtp.org ).
Second year dues are
owing and will be as last year a minimum of $60.00 for the Retros and
$30.00 for the Mods. Last year 87% of you added $100.00 to the minimum
and we sincerely hope this or a higher level of generosity prevails.
Most important is that each of us participate and be counted among those
that support a process that has enriched each of our lives and continues
to provide opportunity for personal growth and leadership development.
Dues are to be sent to
and be made out to Delta Beta Alumni Association, PO Box 89490,
Tucson, Arizona 85752. I have made certain my check for $160.00
was the first and yes, I will be increasing my popularity among the
Brothers by shaking the tree for the remainder of last years promises
and beginning collection of 2006 dues at our event this weekend.
Our goal in 2006 is to
double the dues paying membership and more than double the benefit to
the Chapter which has preformed admirably. The goals can be easily
achieved without financial burden to anyone, if everyone helps both in
participating and encouraging their Brothers to participate.

Spring 2005 Update
I just
wanted to give a quick update about a community service project our chapter just
completed. Philanthropy chairman Colin Popp (freshman) setup and entire
day with the Boys and Girls Club of Tucson. Approximately 45 Betas
attended, spending the day playing games like basketball, pool, cards, and board
games with the children of Tucson. Afterward we put on a BBQ and an Easter
egg hunt. Everyone had a great time.
Coming
up on April 10, Beta will participate in this year's
Susan G. Komen Race for the
Cure. This has become an important annual event for the Chapter to
participate in and this year will be no different. At the moment we have
25 members signed up and over $1,000 dollars raised. Brothers Colin Popp,
Doug Allen, and Matthew Uden have raised the most. Once again, we have far
out-surpassed any other Greek organization on campus in fund-raising for this
event.
With
the end of the semester just around the bend, we will be saying goodbye to a
large group of graduating seniors very soon. Please join me in
congratulating them on this important step in life.

Delta Beta Takes High Honors with Academics and Involvement
Delta
Beta chapter at Arizona is proud to announce that 10 Betas posted 4.0 grade
point averages for the Spring Term. Twenty-six others made the deans list
on campus.

Delta Beta returns from Convention with Awards
Delta Beta’s summer closed with a notably successful trip to the 165th General Convention in Atlanta, GA (August 5-8th). Chapter President Matt Strom (spring ‘02) and Rush Chairman Danny Huck (fall ‘03) made the trip as Delta Beta’s representatives. They proudly returned to Arizona with the Virginia Tech Award for Region A (best grade point average for the year among the regions nine chapters) and the Campus Involvement Award. The chapter also welcomed our new District Chief Wayne Pickerell (Denver ’87) and new Educational Consultant Chad Salas. The chapter must now turn it’s focus on to the fall semester as it looks forward to the excitement of rush.
Looking Ahead: Next year Delta Beta will host the 166th General Convention (August 4-8th) in Scottsdale. Hope to see you all there.

Forbes Reports on Greek CEOs in Major
Corporations
Forbes magazine reported in January that about a quarter of all chief executives on the Forbes Super 500 (a list of America's 500 largest corporations) were members of fraternities during college. Five fraternities were selected as the "Best Fraternities for Future CEOs." The University of Arizona is home to two of these five. In the Forbes Super 500, Beta Theta Pi can boast 11 CEOs, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Chi are tied in second at nine, and Lambda Chi Alpha has eight.
In addition to 120 chief executive officers, fraternities have also fostered the careers of 48% of all U.S. presidents, 42% of U.S. senators, 30% of U.S. congressmen, and 40% of U.S. Supreme Court justices, according to Forbes and the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).
Almost half of the readers surveyed said that fraternities and sororities help college graduates climb the corporate ranks by influencing social development. "Despite what movies such as Animal House suggest, fraternities and sororities are more than just freshman rush and beer busts. The social skills that help students gain admittance into the Greek system are the same aptitudes that can later give them a leg-up in corporate climbing. Plus, once they've graduated, they can tap into the network of past fraternity brothers or sisters who litter all tiers of corporate America."
Wachovia CEO G. Kennedy Thompson said that Beta Theta Pi, which he joined as an undergrad at the University of North Carolina, gave him "the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and places, and the connections have continued beyond my university years to my business life."
